Title: “Docent Daydreams”
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 6″x6″
One day at the Metropolitan Museum in NYC, I was getting a bite to eat at the cafe’ when I noticed this young woman sitting at her table. While waiting for her food, she glazed over into a daydream state and something took her to another place. She looked as if she had just stepped out of one of their Renaissance paintings. Her hair had a wavy texture and her skin was like alabaster. It appeared she worked at the museum.

Title: “Waiting for Monet”
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 6″x6″
Early in January, I went to the Monet in Normandy exhibit at the NC Museum of Art in Raleigh and it was very crowded. To manage the flow, they assigned you a time slot which you could enter the exhibit. The show has since ended but you can tell people really love Monet’s work by the turnout. I purchased a few postcards and placed on my board for reference and just to remember seeing the paintings in person.

Title: “Unwrapped”
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 5″x5″
I have a whole bag of Kisses in my studio. Whenever I need a little boost I’ll grab one. You’ll see a couple more of these; each one in it’s unique pose, some wrapped some unwrapped, maybe some bitten…Like the Hershey’s Kiss itself… there is only one.

Title: “Girl in Red”
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 7″x5″
One day while in Charlotte, there was a rally going on. The adults were very busy talking amongst themselves while this little girl was observing everything around her. To me it appeared the adults were huddled in a group; likely sharing their views and ideas. While the little girl was looking “outside” the group as if to get other input. In addition, her coat and hat stood out loudly against the neutral grays and blacks of the adults.

Title: “Fourtune Cookie IV”
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 5″x5″
We happened upon a great little Chinese restaurant called Rice Fun. It’s owned by a brother and sister. It’s the kind of place where you can watch them cook from your seat or when you are waiting for take out. They have huge gas fired stoves, and stir fry with gigantic woks. Everything is prepared fresh and to your liking. The vegetables come out cooked yet crispy, and they have very healthy portions of whatever meat you choose. We liked the food so much we stop in at least once a week. Opening a fortune cookie to see what your fortune reads at the end of your meal is always a special treat.

Title: “Rain Face II”
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 5″x5″
One cold rainy day a friend and I went to the city for some inspiration. I was attracted to the people scurrying around with their umbrellas. The umbrella appeared to me as a metaphor for shelter - one of our most basic needs.
Over time I’ll likely complete a series of these. The title I will attribute to a friend who mentioned her family lets her know (in jest) when she has her “rain face” on. I laughed because it’s true….take a look at people’s faces next time your in the rain, you’ll see. Thanks Carma!

Title: “Roadster”
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 5″x7″
Whenever we played the monopoly game everyone would “call” their favorite marker. I suppose it made us feel just a little luckier to have something we resonated with.

Title: “Caution: Hot Coffee”
Medium: Oil
Dimensions: 10″x8″
There is nothing like a hot cup of Joe in the morning. This one really showed how hot it was when I took it out on the deck one very brisk morning and the steam rose from the top.

Title: “Greene Street”
Medium: Oils
Dimensions: 7″x5″
Last time I visited NYC I was in SoHo - one of my favorite parts of the city. It was a sunny morning and people were busy shopping and running errands. This flower shop had an amazing selection of colorful flowers, and the sun was hitting them just so. Each passerby couldn’t resist looking to see the array.
